The Ministry of Culture removes the National Bullfighting Award: A Step towards Animal Defense
In an announcement that resonates in the hearts of those who defend animal rights, the Ministry of Culture has decided to take a significant turn by removing the National Bullfighting Award from its annual catalog of awards. This action, led by Ernest Urtasun, of the Sumar party, marks a milestone in the fight against violence towards animals in Spain.
The award, established in 2011, sought to legitimize bullfighting as an art form, assigning it a generous financial endowment. However, this government decision demonstrates a paradigm shift in society’s perception of bullfighting and animal welfare.
It is essential to recognize the fundamental role of those who have tirelessly defended this cause. The Vegan Association of Catalonia, along with other animal rights defenders, has celebrated this move as a step in the right direction.
However, much remains to be done to completely eradicate bullfighting in Spain, a practice that we consider violence, torture and murder.
Statistics reveal a steady decline in attendance at bullfighting events in recent decades, reflecting a change in mentality in Spanish society. Only a tiny percentage of the population attends these shows, which demonstrates a growing rejection of this form of entertainment based on animal suffering.
The elimination of the National Bullfighting Award is not only a symbolic act, but a concrete step towards the protection of animal rights. It is a reminder that culture cannot justify cruelty, and that it is the responsibility of institutions to promote forms of entertainment that respect the life and integrity of all sentient beings.
Although we celebrate this victory, we reaffirm our commitment to continue working tirelessly until bullfighting is a thing of the past in Spain. It is time for institutions to recognize the voice of those who defend the most vulnerable and act accordingly, prioritizing respect and compassion for all living beings.
