International Cat Day
International Cat Day is celebrated on February 20th, but also on August 8th and October 29th. The reason for these multiple dates is the popularity and love for cats worldwide. The cat is one of the animals that has provided the most companionship to humans throughout history.
The cat is the only animal that celebrates International Cat Day three times a year, do you know why? Let me explain:
February 20th: Started in honor of Socks, the famous cat adopted by Chelsea, daughter of former United States President Bill Clinton. Socks aged while making several appearances and campaigns to raise funds for various charitable purposes, but over the years, he developed several health problems, and ultimately, neck cancer, for which they decided to euthanize him to prevent further suffering. This happened on February 20th, 2009. In his honor, on the anniversary of his death, several organizations and fans of this famous cat established this date to commemorate World Cat Day.
August 8th: The second day on the annual calendar in honor of cats, August 8th. A date decided in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to raise awareness about caring for these felines, as they are one of the main pets of humans. The reason for this day is that it is one of the largest moments of fertility for cats.
October 29th: Proposed by Colleen Paige to raise awareness about the abandonment of cats in the streets of cities.
If you decide to share your life with a cat, remember: adopt, care for, sterilize, keep up with their vaccines, and above all, dedicate the time they deserve—they are another member of the family.
