Scandal at Miami Seaquarium: Animal cruelty and deaths at Florida's largest aquarium
The Miami Seaquarium, the largest water park in Florida, has been the subject of intensive complaints and controversy due to the deplorable conditions in which the animals it houses are found. At least 120 whales and dolphins have recently been reported dead at its facility, sparking a public outcry to close the park and rescue the animals that still reside there.
Among the most alarming cases is that of the famous orca Lolita, whose situation has been a cause for concern for years. However, it is not the only case. Recent allegations reveal that many animals are overcrowded, abused and in deplorable conditions. A dolphin was found with a 5cm nail in its throat and a sea lion with sore eyes that did not undergo surgery.
In addition, the veterinary laboratory within the park has been found to lack basic diagnostic tools such as ultrasound, x-rays or working anesthesia, putting the health and welfare of the animals at risk.
Faced with this situation, Miami County has ordered the Dolphin Company, owner of the Miami Seaquarium, to vacate the land by April 21. The reasons behind this order are the “numerous and significant violations” of the rental agreement, which represent “not only a breach, but a complete disregard for the safety of the animals housed in the facilities.”
Although it has not yet been decided what will happen to the animals once the park closes, “veterinarians and experts” are being consulted to determine the next steps. It is essential that urgent measures are taken to ensure the welfare of these animals and find them a safe home where they can live in suitable conditions.
The situation at the Miami Seaquarium is a reminder of the importance of protecting and respecting all forms of life on our planet. It's time to end animal exploitation in the name of entertainment and work towards a future where animals are treated with dignity and respect.
From the Vegan Association of Catalonia, we urge the authorities to take firm measures to close the Miami Seaquarium and ensure that the animals are transferred to sanctuaries where they can live free from suffering and exploitation. Together, we can create a more compassionate and just world for all living things.
